Negambo BeachDay 1

Arrival Day

Welcome to Sri Lanka · Negombo

  • Arrival — Touch down at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and transfer to Negombo, a laid-back coastal town just a short drive from the airport.
  • Spend the rest of your day settling in — take a slow walk along the lagoon, breathe in the salt air, and let the island ease you in gently.
  • Dinner at leisure — this is your first taste of Sri Lanka, so pull up a chair by the water and order something fresh from the sea.

Day 2 · Markets & Wildlife

Negombo Fish Market · Dambulla

  • Negombo Fish Market — Start your morning at one of Sri Lanka's busiest and most atmospheric fish markets. Boats come in at dawn, and the quayside hums with activity — tuna, seer fish, crab, and prawns all traded at a remarkable pace.
  • PRE-BOOKING REQUIRED
Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park Safari — En route to Dambulla, these two parks are famous for something extraordinary: one of the largest gatherings of wild Asian elephants on the planet, drawn to the reservoir as the dry season sets in.
  • Continue to Dambulla — the ancient heart of Sri Lanka, ringed by rock fortresses and cave temples that have stood for over two thousand years.
Overnight stay · Dambulla

Tip: we can arrange all pre-bookings for you.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Sri LankaDay 3

Day 3 · Rock & Village

Pidurangala Sunrise · Village Life

  • Pidurangala Rock — Rise before dawn and make the climb to the top. When the light comes up, you're rewarded with one of Sri Lanka's finest views — Sigiriya Rock rising straight out of the jungle directly in front of you. Worth every step.
  • Village Experience — Step into rural Sri Lanka for an afternoon. Glide across a village lake on a traditional catamaran, wander through local farms, and join a hands-on cooking demonstration of the kind of food that never appears on a restaurant menu.
  • PRE-BOOKING REQUIRED
Sigiriya Rock Fortress — Scale the 200-metre rock that once held a palace at its summit. The ancient frescoes, mirror wall, and water gardens are a reminder of just how sophisticated 5th-century Sri Lanka really was. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Overnight stay · Dambulla

Day 4 · Ancient Ruins

Polonnaruwa · Lost City

  • Polonnaruwa Ancient City — Sri Lanka's medieval capital, and one of the best-preserved ruined cities in Asia. Wander through royal palaces, crumbling dagobas, and the famous Gal Vihara — four giant Buddha figures carved directly into a single granite face. Striking and serene in equal measure.
  • Return to Dambulla for the evening — your base for exploring the Cultural Triangle.
Overnight stay · Dambulla

Day 5 · Caves, Herbs & Temples

Matale · Ayurveda · Kandy

  • PRE-BOOKING REQUIRED
Dambulla Cave Temple — Five caves hollowed into a vast granite outcrop, packed with over 150 Buddha statues and sweeping murals painted across the ceilings and walls. The oldest of Sri Lanka's great cave temples, and still very much in active use.
  • Ayurveda Village · Matale — A walk through an Ayurvedic herb and spice garden where someone who clearly knows their plants explains what grows here and why. Cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, neem — all laid out with the logic of a centuries-old healing tradition.
  • Matale Alu Vihara Cave Temple — This modest rock-cut temple holds a remarkable distinction: it's where Buddhist monks first committed the Tipitaka — the entire body of Buddhist scripture — to writing, in the 1st century BC.
  • Scenic drive up into the hills to Kandy — Sri Lanka's last royal capital, set in a bowl of forested ridges above a quiet lake.
Overnight stay · Kandy

Day 6 · Temples & Dance

Ancient Kandy · Arts & Ritual

  • Lankathilaka, Embekke & Gadaladeniya Temples — Three medieval temples, each built in a different century and each with a distinct character. Embekke is famous for its intricately carved wooden pillars; Gadaladeniya blends South Indian and Sinhalese styles; Lankathilaka rises four storeys from a rocky outcrop. A morning well spent.
  • Evening Kandyan Cultural Show — As night falls, take your seat for a traditional Kandyan dance performance. Costumed dancers move to the rhythm of Kandyan drums, building to a fire-walking finale that tends to leave audiences quietly astonished.

Day 7 · Tea & Trains

Tea Country · Scenic Train to Ella

  • Tea Factory Visit · Nuwara Eliya — See how Ceylon tea goes from the bush to the cup. The factory tour follows the whole process — withering, rolling, fermenting, drying — and ends with a freshly brewed cup poured at altitude, surrounded by rows of dark green tea bushes.
  • Scenic Train Ride to Ella — Widely considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The line climbs through mist-covered estates, skirts the edges of deep valleys, and winds past waterfalls before dropping down into Ella. Keep the window open.
Overnight stay · Ella

Day 8 · Peaks & Bridges

Ella Highlights · Hike & Wander

  • Mini Adam's Peak — A manageable morning hike through tea fields to a summit with open views across the Ella Gap. The valley below stretches out on both sides, and on a clear day you can see for miles in every direction.
  • Nine Arch Bridge — Built entirely from brick and stone by local workers during the First World War, this colonial-era viaduct is one of the most photographed spots in Sri Lanka. Time it right and a train will roll slowly across while you watch from the jungle below.
Overnight stay · Ella
A leopard in a forestDay 9

Day 9 · Waterfalls & Wilderness

Rawana Falls · Yala · Tissamaharama

  • Rawana Waterfalls — A wide curtain of water tumbling down a cliff face just off the main road south — one of those stops that takes five minutes and stays with you much longer.
  • Buduruwagala — Seven rock-cut figures carved into a sheer granite face in the 9th century, standing over 15 feet tall and still holding their original detail. Remote, quiet, and genuinely impressive.
  • PRE-BOOKING REQUIRED
Yala National Park Safari — Home to the highest density of leopards of any national park in the world, along with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and a remarkable range of birdlife. An afternoon or evening game drive here can change how you think about wildlife.
Overnight stay · Tissamaharama

Tip: we can arrange all pre-bookings for you.

Kataragama Esala Festival, Sri LankaDay 10

Day 10 · Sacred Kataragama

Pilgrimage Town · Kataragama

  • Kataragama — A short drive from Tissamaharama brings you to one of the most compelling places in Sri Lanka. This small town draws Buddhist, Hindu and indigenous Vedda pilgrims alike to the same sacred precinct — a rare thing in the world, and quietly moving to witness. The rituals at the Maha Devale temple are especially vivid in the evening.
  • Return to Tissamaharama for the night.
Overnight stay · Tissamaharama

Day 11 · Elephants & the Fort

Udawalawe · Galle · Beach Arrival

  • Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home — A rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Public feeding is permitted daily at 10:30 AM — the sight of a dozen young elephants charging toward the caretakers with bottles of milk is something you don't forget.
  • Galle Dutch Fort — On the way to the coast, walk the ramparts of this 17th-century fortified town. Inside the walls you'll find cobbled streets, colonial architecture, boutique cafés and the sea on three sides — a perfectly preserved world in miniature.
  • Arrive at your beach hotel and trade the road for the shoreline. Your southern coast retreat begins tonight.

Days 12 & 13 · Beach Leisure

Southern Coast · Beach Days

  • Two Full Days at the Beach — No itinerary, no agenda. Sleep in, swim, read something long, eat well, and walk along the shore whenever you feel like it. Sri Lanka's southern beaches are exactly what this part of the trip is for.
  • Fresh coconut water, grilled seafood, tropical fruit — these two days belong entirely to you.
